Why Liberia

Liberia’s two civil wars saw the death of over 400,000 people and the displacement of over 1 million.  Even now after 10 years of peace, the reality of Liberia’s shattered economy means 9 out of 10 people are living on less than $2 per day. Eleven years of strife tore the country to pieces, and now even basic infrastructure is no longer available.

Although the government is doing what it can to provide education and supplies to the masses, in some communities adequate support is not available. Those without financial support are left helpless.

Without access to education, the poorest families struggle to see hope for a better future.

Although our modern nation is new, its foundations are deeply rooted and the vision for the future is inspiring. War has taught us that the future lies in saying ‘no’ to violence and ‘yes’ to peace. We have learned that, by putting aside our differences, celebrating our diverse cultural heritage and working together, we can build a strong and stable future for our families.

Open to Learn wholeheartedly embraces this belief in what we can achieve together and seeks to rebuild in the spirit of conciliation and collaboration. We have a huge potential to tap and our school in Buchanan is just the first step to a bright future.
